9.9 Mediaworx To Acquire Jasubhai Digital: Report

By Nikhil Pahwa - Thu 13 Dec 2007 09:55 PM PST

9.9 Mediaworx, founded by former ABP CEO Dr. Pramath Sinha, is going to acquire Jasubhai Digital Media, the technology media business of the Jasubhai Group, reports Business Standard. As per the story, Jasubhai Digital Media has revenues of Rs. 25-30 crores, though the value of the deal has not been ascertained.

I spoke to Sinha, and he’s refused to confirm the news. He says that they’ll probably announce “a deal” on Monday, next week.

Jasubhai Digital Media publishes consumer focused magazines like Digit (computer) and SKOAR! (gaming). They also publish Industry 2.0, a technology management company, and organize events like SKOAR! for gaming and the CTO Forum. On the face of it, it fits in well with 9.9 Mediaworx’ strategy of monetizing niche content across media platforms and events. Digit, which was launched as Chip several years ago, had a built a user base on giving trial versions of games and software on CDs, as well as tips and tricks; the need for that content has pretty much vanished with broadband, faster dialup and pervasive piracy, and the proliferation of similar magazines hasn’t helped. BS says that the company had been on the block for a while. Founded recently by Sinha, with former ABP execs including Vikas Gupta, Asheesh Gupta and Anuradha Das Mathur, 9.9 Mediaworx includes five businesses: 9.9 Insights, 9.9 Digital, 9.9 Print, 9.9 Ventures and 9.9 Studio. They’re also looking to invest in the newspaper space, and will be raising funds for growth. The company has tie-ups with Sao Paulo based Jai Group and NDTV Profit. See related links for more.

Imagine a situation where Pramath and his crack team go ahead and buy out Bartaman on one hand and The Statesman on the other. That would be enough to send chills down the Sarkar Brothers’ spine. Consider this: Barun Sengupta of Bartaman is old and doesnt have a second line of succession. If his control is not disturbed for now, why should he mind a takeover, which can potentially pit him strongly against ABP for a much fatter chunk of the regional circulation and ad revenue pie. On the other hand, Ravinder Kumar is Late CR Irani’s boy on the burning deck, fighting it out sincerely against all odds. If 9.9 is indeed thinking on these lines, it can change the media landscape of the East for good measure. Which other newspaper could they have interests in anyways? I dont think a sudden entry into the national scene with the Pioneers or Asian Ages makes sense. Nor does it make sense to launch another DNA and drain out a few hundred crores. Plus, Pramath Sinha has known the eastern market for over ten years, thanks to his Mckinsey consulting tenure for ABP.  Now Vikas has also turned east ka beast, thanks to his last role as president ad sales. So Statesman and Bartaman, it just might be! Are we ready for a sequel to “Sarkar”? Wotsay?

What seems obvious may not be so. No business runs on the premise of sending chills down the spines of… Dr Sinha and his team are no novices in business. East ka beast - is it ferocious enough? Is there not better meat available elsewhere? Good luck to all.

I am more interested in seeing how this affects the quality and content of Jasubhai Mags. the two biggest ones [SKOAR! and Digit] already have inferior content as it is; Digit is hopeless (no, really) and SKOAR’s immature attitude and lack of professionalism kills whatever miniscule credibility they create with their E3-esque gaming expos and the 10Gigabyte of warez they bundle. eitherway, Interesting news and nice site ^^

A few years back i was a avid fan of digit and usually the first one to buy it from the local magazinewala ! But as i got used to the internet, i could see that most of what they wrote in their tips and trick and other articles was available freely online.

So i simply made the shift and prevented from collecting a heap of waste paper with me !! Though i still have some old issues of digit dating back to 2001 even…

Also jasubhai completely missed the online bus - theres no way they should have let Techtree and Tech2 become the top online tech sites inspite of such a massive first mover advantage

No MK, let me correct you, tech 2 was started by a few ex tectree guys, who werent even core, then there is no reason why Jasubhai Digital media cant do a similar thing. Maybe take a few experienced proffessionals from relevant portals and they are set. Very logical. I think that will happen, 9dot9 is too smart to let that go.
