Ad Service Komli Raises $7 Million First Round From Nexus India, DFJ And Helion Ventures

By David Kaplan - Tue 08 Jan 2008 09:50 AM PST

Updated below
(Original Story)Ad serving tech firm PubMatic has raised $7 million in a first round financing. The round was led by Nexus India Capital along with previous backers Draper Fisher Jurvetson and Helion Ventures, which participated in the company’s undisclosed seed round last August. Currently in beta, PubMatic is working with 1,500 publishers and a few dozen ad networks, including Google (NSDQ: GOOG) AdSense, Advertising.com and BlueLithium. The San Francisco company, which started its business last year and has two offices in India, is targeting small- to medium-sized publishers. PubMatic’s services include marketers with a publisher or ad network. It also works on the ad’s design and managing ad tags. Release

Nikhil adds: The release mentions that Pubmatic is a service of Komli. Now Komli had received an undisclosed amount of funding from DFJ and Helion Ventures earlier last year, and I’m wondering whether this deal is independent of the VC’s investment in Komli. We’ve contacted the parties involved for a clarification, and will update when we have more.

Update: Just spoke to Amar Goel, founder of Pubmatic and Komli. He has confirmed to ContentSutra that the parent company Komli that has raised the $7 million mentioned above from the three VCs; Pubmatic is a service offered by Komli. Also, note that the $7 million is a consolidated amount that includes the funding Komli had raised last year from DFJ and Helion Ventures, as a part of a seed round. Nexus India Capital has invested in the co recently. Goel did not give a breakup of how much each VC has invested.

Nikhil thanks for providing the updates on the story.

As far as Komli/PubMatic are concerned it shows there are some quality deals being done by VC’s in the internet space.  Although, all the attention these days is around the equity markets and “blank check” IPO’s.

I am a little confused. Is Pubmatic and Komli the same company ?
And did both of these companies get funded independently? if yes then did Pubmatic ensure another funding to Komli?
Its little confusing...not sure if its just me

  • From Amar Goel Wed 09 Jan 2008 01:56 AM

    Amit,

Sorry for any confusion.  PubMatic is a service provided by Komli.  Komli is the parent company and the entity that has received $7M.

    Thanks,
    Amar Goel

How big is the internet advertisement market in india ? what % of Total Advertisement Budget ??

  • From Srini Thu 10 Jan 2008 12:24 AM

    Hi Prashanth,

Currently there are so many figures that exist in industry. Most of them say that internet advertising in India is about 400 to 600 crores and more than 35% of it is enjoyed by Google.

Currently BFSI companies and online companies are the biggest spenders in online advertising. Online companies are allocating 40% to 60% of their total ad budget to internet.

However other sectors like automobiles, computers, real estate, FMCG and few other are also getting interested in online advertising. Currently these sectors are allocating anywhere between 3% to 10% of their annual budget to internet advertising.

Industry is expecting to reach 2000 crores 2012. But, if the broadband penetration increases at a faster pace may be with the help of government, you can expect it to reach some bigger numbers.

Komli and Tyroo seem to be the best adnetworks currently in India. ozonemedia seems to be the third best, when it comes to Indian based ad networks.

However, with the arrival of Tribalfusion, DGM, and several others the market may heat up quickly. I wish for a strong competition for Google in India.

All of who believe that Indian Adnetwork performs just check with agencies and their clients who have burnt their fingers.

DGM is an affiliate marketing network, and Tribalfusion,Adsmart,Adbrite being
global adnetworks with lots of indian sites apart from Google Adsense

so all of those who have used google adsense and tasted success, its time to graduate to other global ad networks.
