Airtel, RCom Get Go-Ahead For IPTV; Unregulated Cable Operators

By Nikhil Pahwa - Mon 11 Feb 2008 09:39 AM PST

Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications have received the go-ahead to roll out IPTV services, reports TMCnet. We’d reported that Airtel intends to launch services in the first quarter of the next fiscal. They have around 1000 customers in the NCR (Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida) region, and will focus on North India with the initial launch. Also, we’d reported earlier that the I&B Ministry has given the go-ahead to IPTV over Cable TV. The TRAI secretary, as per IPTV Watch, has put things into perspective, saying that deployment of IPTV by cable operators would take time, since there are 50,000 unregistered cable operators that will beed to be brought under the regulation. The DoT is yet to give a go-ahead to ISPs.
