BCCI Invites Bids To Host Web Portal; Minimum Guarantee $50 Million

By Sahad PV - Thu 15 Mar 2007 10:08 PM PST

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited bids for hosting BCCI’s web-portal, reports The Economic Times. The contract will be for the next four years, and it’s expected to provide news, highlights, archival footage, statistics, streaming video, merchandising and mobile phone content. Here comes the catch. The board expects a $50 million minimum guarantee by the hosting party for the next four years, ET reports quoting a source. And that’s going to be tough.
BCCI has appointed Accenture to shortlist and appoint the company to host the website. Last year, BCCI had tied up with The Cricket Network (TCN) to design, build and operate its web portal, and it had asked for a minimum guarantee of $100 million. The deal fell through on this count. The bids are expected to come in the next four to six weeks. Now it remains to be seen how many will be comfortable with $50 million.

I refer to the above article, BCCI invites bids for the Web Portal to correct the information about TCN and the approach last year.

For your information The Cricket Network (“TCN”) signed an agreement with the BCCI on 10 April 2006 to build, own and operate what was to be the world’s leading cricket web-portal. The web-portal known as BCCI.TV was constructed by TCN and scheduled for launch at the Champions Trophy, in India in October 2006.

A rival consortium, with Microsoft as a key member subsequently submitted an alternative strategy, at which point the consultants Accenture were appointed for a 14 day review in August 2006. Contrary to a previous report in The Economic Times dated 16 March 2007, TCN’s arrangements with the BCCI did not include a minimum guarantee, but a management agreement, and its current status is being resolved.

Microsoft has recently joined the TCN Consortium, which includes Sun Microsystems, the Indian giant Wipro and the world’s leading internet content delivery company Akamai.

TCN has been approached by Accenture to participate in the tender. A TCN spokesman has advised that with its world class consortium it is very confident of prevailing in any tender. He said that with its ready made web portal available for immediate launch and a detailed understanding of the BCCI’s requirements fostered over the last 12 months it is well placed for the upcoming tender.
