BigAdda Claims 1.2 Million Users

By Nikhil Pahwa - Tue 08 Jan 2008 04:56 AM PST

Reliance ADA Group’s social networking site BigAdda has released some stats on usage on it’s site. The stats:

-- The site claims to have 1.24 million users, adding 12,000-15,000 a day, and is targeting 10 million users by 2010
-- India’s top 20 cities accounting for 50 percent of users.
-- 40 percent users are from Tier 2 cities, while 10 percent from countries like Sri Lanka, Pakistan, US, UK and also Dubai in the UAE.
-- 78 percent of the users are between 16-27 yrs
-- 78 percent of the males and 28 percent females are from schools & colleges
-- 44 percent of the working users are working in IT, Finance and Services, and 15 percent in Manufacturing and Media
-- 40 percent of users consume videos and share them – create their own mash-ups thereby initiating comments /discussions and their by networking
-- 57 percent of the users have created their photo galleries
-- There are 15000 Addas (communities)

I tried to confirm the user base at the site, and it appears BigAdda member search only displays 1000 members at a time—25 users per page, over 40 pages. Thus, no way of confirming the user base on the, so take these numbers with a caveat that we haven’t been able to verify them. 1.24 million users has been achieved in less than six months, though it’s not that the growth has been word-of-mouth alone: it’s been supported by mass media and online advertising: with billboards on the street and advertisements on TV. Orkut, via word of mouth (and probably negative coverage in the press), some believe, has already crossed 10 million users in India (6.5 million users was mentioned by former Google (NSDQ: GOOG) India country manager Ashish Kashyap at a conference in June last year). In August last year, Reliance Entertainment President Rajesh Sawhney had told us that the site had 100,000 users (then), and was targeting to break even in three years.

The numbers dont mean a thing, its the activity on the site that matters. How long a user surfs, the number of pages he visits, how many videos/photos are being uploaded, they will never release those stats. I still dont have a single friend of mine on that site. Also major email providers like gmail and yahoo are automatiically routing any mail from big adda servers to spam folders, I dont know if others have noticed this. I’m still very bearish about big adda.

ok, i got more stats from alootechie like session time etc (http://www.alootechie.net/news/bigadda-claims-124-million-registered-users-adding-15-indians-a-minute/) ... but still i’m yet to come across anyone who used bigadda to upload their albums/videos instead of using youtube or flickr.

I can only smile at that.

Even if you have to make such outright ridiculous claims, at least don’t leave traces behind on your site which suggest otherwise.

Sometime back Mister President Sahwney said some 10,000 videos are being uploaded each day. Go to bigadda and in the video section sort by recently added videos http://www.bigadda.com/index.php?L=video.members&x=video . The 1000th most recent video was added some 12 days back. Clearly only 100 are being uploaded each day.

Thats a 100x error in reporting smile You can verify for other claims using similar hacks.

    See their forum section http://www.bigadda.com/index.php?L=forums.browse_boards&catID=8
This should have been a very popular channel, the last time someone posted was in October on some topics smile

Atleast be clever like desimartini which says “sold for less than $10m” or Minglebox when they say “closing in on 1 million users” which are so subjective that they do not constitute to be called an outright white lie smile

How many people here are on bigadda vs facebook vs orkut. I’m sure this audience is not your typical sample space. but might give some indication.

I’m on facebook and that’s it.

We should not forget that it is a product from Reliance. Hence 2 things are given. Product will be targetted at the masses and not the tech loving hard-nosed martians like us. Second, they will build scale like nobody’s business. If 1 mill happened in 6 months, I won’t be surprised if they reach their stated objective of 10mill in 2010 (I think Mister Sawhney said that in one of the conferences).
IF Orkut has reached 10 mill in 5 years, too bad.

And not to forget the food chain: members=>content=>views/session time etc.

I recently checked out the sections. Video and photo section are quite active. Addas are lukewarm. Forums completely thanda. Maybe they need some of us to spice it up there. smile

I think bigadda is ny time better than minglebox or desimartini. I don’t know about the userbase claims. But I dont doubt it. It could be possible. Getting a one mill userbase is no big deal as of today. I am sure they must’ve not bought users.
I am using it.. not very regularly though but i have seen serious improvement in the product.

The one truth is that Reliance employs far more people than anyone else. So if they insist that every one of their employees makes atleast one site for him/herself and one for each of thier family members… that should account for a lot. Then Anil can maybe call up mukesh for help… thats another million atleast.

I dont think anyone can question the ability to spend, to recover..now thats a different issue…

Remember the game is not about registered users, its about daily active users although this may change when you reach above 10 million users.

For now 1.24 means “you have nothing ma boy”.

the 1.24 million number is commendable.. but with the videos collection on their site, its not surprising..

Its ONLINE BOOM Time In India..  I Remebering Year 1998..

i do believe that with the current internet penetration and the huge media spend done by these guys, a million plus registrations is gettable. the product is looking a lot better now, specially the videos and music (which were pleasantly surprising). im an eternal optimist so i do hope to see more innovative products from all Indian social networking sites. To the experts, i, among others would surely like to see constructive criticisms and assessments rather than blatantly patronising or ripping a site apart.

Accirding to Alexa, Biggadda gets 4.3 pageviews from every user on average.

People who view their tv ads log in and view one page, maybe register and log out. maybe view one more page. hehe.

they should get somebody who knows what a social network is. heh. sorry.

  • From Moll Fri 18 Jan 2008 09:34 AM

Yeah, chorkut gets 35 pageviews per user.
