BSNL To Initially Invest Rs.1,000 Crore On Wireless Broadband

By Anupama Chandrasekaran - Fri 10 Aug 2007 01:21 AM PST

State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) is in talks with system integrators and hardware vendors for a countrywide, mobile high-speed data network with a first-year investment of up to Rs1,000 crore and is aiming at 400,000 to 500,000 new customers for the service by then. That’s almost five times the outlook of private competitor Reliance Communications Ltd., which launched its broadband wireless service last month with a target of 100,000 customers by the end of the first year. BSNL’s wireless broadband services are scheduled to be rolled out in around 70 cities within the first year. The company is targeting around 2 million new customers by the end of the third year.
