Central Govt To Monitor Orkut On Sena Backlash

By Anupama Chandrasekaran - Mon 11 Jun 2007 01:32 AM PST

Google-owned social-networking site Orkut will not be banned by the Indian government pending evaluation of a complaint lodged by nationalist political party Shiv Sena, Indiantelevision.com reports. A section of the Shiv Sena cracked down on cyber cafes in Mumbai to protest against certain hate-communities on the orkut.com, which allegedly contained derogatory material about Shivaji and the Thackeray family [via TOI]. Reuters also reported that the student wing of the Shiv Sena has asked public Internet centres in India to partly block access to Orkut, and is making a software to monitor abusive communities on the popular social networking site.

Typical Indian extra judicial approach: beat up call centre employees and get ministers to pass laws. What are the courts there for?

And then Manmohan Sign comes out and says that courts are overstepping their jurisdiction....

ok, this is really starting to worry me. If the govt had just dismissed this as another sena stunt, i would have been really happy but why does it give importance to foolish things like these. Are we going to see something similar to the blogspot.com blackout that happened some months ago. Someone should send a strong signal to the center to stop medelling with peoples’ freedom
