I will bet, Face book will surpass the Orkut soon because of Apps on Facebook. As orkut becoming spam, vulgar site there is no taste left in Orkut, Google strategy is to Develop as much Apps [Carrier] as Possible for Adsense[becoming crap] & Adwords.
Why compare Facebook with Orkut alone? Comparative study with all other similar products will certainly help.
