ESPN-STAR Sports Acquires Australian Open New Media Rights

ESPN-STAR Sports (ESS) has signed a seven year contract with Tennis Australia for coverage of the Austalian Open till 2014. The contract covers Cable, Satellite, IPTV, DTG and Terrestrial rights, and for the first time, includes rights for new media platforms including mobile telephony and the Internet. The rights for 2008 include China, but thereafter will be for 23 countries across South Asia, South East Asia and North Asia, but not China. ESS has 17 networks covering 24 countries.
Their online portfolio includes espnstar.com, espnstar.com.cn, espnstar.com.tw and footballcrazy.tv. On the mobile front, they have mobileESPN (NYSE: DIS) and STAR Sports Mobile, with mobileESPN targeting the serious sports fan, and STAR Sports Mobile providing entertainment content.
