HCL Launches Sub Rs 14000 Laptops

By Nikhil Pahwa - Wed 16 Jan 2008 04:23 AM PST

The cost of laptops has often been cited as an impediment to the uptake of wireless broadband in India; around 40 percent of computers bought in India were laptops last year, and it appears that the lure of mobility will also be backed by low cost: HCL Infosystems has launched MiLeap, a series of laptops starting from Rs. 13,990, weighing less than a kg, with both flash based and disk based storage cersions. The ports are WiFi ready, with Linux OS. Some photos here. Not much about the features in the release here about the low end laptops, while they’ve given details of the high end series.

There are, of course, other low cost computing devices in India. While the low end MiLeap is priced at around $360, the XO (from the One Laptop Per Child project) is at around $220. Others are thin clients, from Novatium and IChip, both around $100 range.
