HT Media Buys Social Networking Site DesiMartini

Hindustan Times Media group has bought social networking site Desimartini.com, through its online subsidiary Firefly eVentures. The financial terms were not disclosed, but HT Media said it was for less than $10 million (Rs 39.3 crore). The site was launched late last year, and has a membership base of 250,000, and has around 2.5 million page views a month, the company says.
Of course there is tons of competition in the space: Google’s (NSDQ: GOOG) Orkut, ibibo, Indyarocks, Yaari and Bigadda, among others. According to Amit Garg, business head, internet, HT Media, “It may look like we are late in getting into the local social networking business, but the Internet business is still in infancy and not mature in India..It will be the second bite of the apple as we learn from others’ mistakes.”
Update: Our readers/commenters below are skeptical of the price, and say that the price has to be a lot less than $10 million, and the official quote is misleading, though of course technically accurate (less than $10 million can mean anything). I tend to agree with them...and openly-blatant Facebook-ripoff design. I hope HT knows what it is getting into. If Facebook launches in India in the future, they’ll surely come after HT on the design part...(as an aside, see this post from Mashable on the top 10 Facebook design copycats...DesiMartini is in there).
Disclaimer: DesiMartini founder Vivek Pahwa is Nikhil’s cousin.
