Indian Animation Studios See Top Dollars In 2D To 3D Conversions

By Anupama Chandrasekaran - Tue 26 Jun 2007 09:53 PM PST

With a big chunk of new-age animation being three dimensional, some Indian animation studios are seeing a revenue opportunity in converting old two dimensional animation into the three dimensional format for audiences abroad, reports Mint. Mumbai-based Crest Animation Studios Ltd, has bagged the contract to convert animation films of Arthur the aardvark from 2D to 3D.  “The camera movement in 3D, the facial expressions, the muscles in the face, the hair waving in the breeze, every minute detail of a waterfall— these are things you can’t get in 2D animation,” A.K. Madhavan, chief executive officer of Crest told Mint. Creating a 3D cartoon involves reshaping a flat cartoon, as in a comic strip, into one where you can go around a character and look at it from all angles, according to the article.  Chennai-based animation company Sanra Software has just won a Rs10 crore deal for “anywhere between one and three years” to convert a 1970s cartoon series made in the UK. It is also bidding for two more projects which could be worth Rs40 crore, says Sanra’s Chief Executive Sukumar Subramanian. The market for conversion of 2D animation into 3D is estimated to be between $1 billion and $2 billion over the next two years, according to A. Venkatramani, a director of Chennai-based film distribution company G.V. Films Ltd, which is also scouting around for an investment in this space.
