Jaman Screens Short Films From Bollywood Directors; How Are Short Films Doing Online?

By Nikhil Pahwa - Mon 18 Feb 2008 10:53 PM PST

Jaman, a World Cinema community, has launched Jaago, a compilation of four short films - Migration, Blood Brothers, Positive and Prarambha - from directors Vishal Bhardwaj, Farhan Akhtar, Santosh Sivan and Mira Nair. The films are a part of Nair’s project about HIV/AIDS, and has been funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The films are being screened free on Jaman’s site, here, and feature a number of Indian film stars including Shabana Azmi, Prabhudeva, Irrfan Khan, Ayesha Takia, Boman Irani, Raima Sen, Siddharth and Sameera Reddy. From what I’ve heard, full length movies get limited play online - a maximum of 30-45 minutes of a 3 hour film viewed at a stretch, which probably explains the recent proliferation of TV content. But is there any quality short film content, or for that matter, the demand for it? So far, short films haven’t found takers offline, apart from compilations like Dus Kahaniyan, with 10 short stories woven together (and thus no change in the length of the overall film).
