Microsoft-NDTV Media Combine To Sell Advertising On Facebook In India

By Nikhil Pahwa - Tue 22 Apr 2008 10:08 PM PST

The Microsoft-NDTV Media has found its way to Facebook, courtesy an International advertising deal between MS and Facebook till 2011. At the time the deal was struck, around 59 percent of Facebook’s users were from outside the US. Readers should also remember that Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) had picked up 1.6 percent stake in Facebook at a valuation of $15 billion last October. The hype: Facebook has seen a growth in excess of 200 per cent year-on-year in India. 200 percent isn’t much when you’re beginning with a low base. Exchange4media reports that as per the exclusive deal for advertising on Facebook, Microsoft will sell display, rich media, contextual and video advertising on Facebook in India.

As a user, I shudder at the thought of video ads on Facebook, and hope Microsoft won’t stick their awful bandwidth leeching Desktop TV application into Facebook...if that happens, I’m switching permanently to Twitter (my id), which has become a 24x7 chat room of sorts. In fact, there’s been a noticeable increase in number of Industry execs at Twitter over the past couple of weeks… the CEO of Times Internet (Indiatimes) signed up yesterday.

Microsoft is trying to do whatever it can do with its 1.6 percent stake in Facebook. Indian social networking is booming with all major sites launching their indian version. But if you look at Indian social networking market, Orkut is the only King.Orkut is so popular in India that neither facebook nor myspace india can make any damage to orkut.
