Mundu Radio On Idea Cellular; Issues With Streaming Music Over GPRS?

By Nikhil Pahwa - Tue 19 Feb 2008 07:32 PM PST

Geodesic Information Systems has tied up with mobile operator Idea Cellular to launch Idea Radio over GPRS. Idea Radio - of the Mundu Radio solution - gives users access to a number of Internet radio stations over GPRS, over and above the standard FM Radio fare one gets in India; the regional content - like Punjabi and Bhojpuri - and devotional content just might work. Now Worldspace (NSDQ: WRSP) radio uses similar positioning, and it’s not available on the move. Mundu Radio is available free online as well, so the price of Rs. 149 per month or Rs. 10 per day is probably down to data transfer charges for GPRS. Idea Cellular has 20 million customers, and this might help increase the number of GPRS users. What could work against Idea Radio is the quality of GPRS coverage - it’s not always seamless and not quite FM - and that will put some people off.

What they have think about lower range of phones like series 40 & series 60? Are they capable of playing radio over GPRS?

The product is quite good. No data charges. just a monthly subscription.. At least theres no dull RJ yapping away… just good quality music esp the english channels..

The service is definitely valuable as one gets clutterfree content and a variety of content that is not readily available through traditional FM channels. I also like the fact that i can use it even when I am travelling smile
