Capital18 Acquires Stake In Webchutney

By Nikhil Pahwa - Wed 21 Nov 2007 02:09 AM PST

You’re reading it here first: ContentSutra has learned from sources that Network18 Capital18 has acquired a majority substantial (not majority) stake in interactive marketing agency Webchutney. Known for it’s online virals, Webchutney was founded in 1999 by Sidharth Rao and Sudesh Samaria. The company had received an undisclosed amount of funding from Russian Hill Ventures. As per its site, Webchutney provides a range of services - interface design and marketing, application development, data analysis and consultancy. Webchutney has offices in New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore and employs over 70 100 people. It’s competitors include BC Webwise, Media2Win, Hungama, among others. We’re trying to get more details on the deal, so watch this space.

Update: Webchutney will not be a part of Web18, Network18’s internet and mobile arm.

Update: Had some trouble getting through to Webchutney after I broke the story...apparently they wanted to blog about the funding. Some corrections in the story above: Sidharth Rao, CEO of Webchutney tells me that the investment is from Capital18, Network18s venture capital arm. Capital18 has picked up a substantial stake, though not a majority one, and the company will remain independent. The money will be used to make investments in Social Media, Rich Interactive Applications (where they’re looking at key partnerships) and hiring. Currently, Webchutney employs 100 people, and Rao expects that number to increase to 150 by May 2008. They’ll also look at expanding to Chennai and Hyderabad, though before that, they plan to expand their operations in Malaysia and Singapore.

Disclaimer: I own an inconsequential number of shares of Network18

    Nikhil,
Why do you think it is not part of web18?

  • From Dapple Wed 21 Nov 2007 05:39 AM

We know you broke this news FIRST. (Now you are becoming like Times of India *smiles*) But before that get the facts right

They are no where close to 100 people. They have a solid team in Delhi and Mumbai. They have few guys in Blore (only sales). They are an Interactive marketing company. Now mostly towards media buying. Which is what Network18..sorry Capital18 is looking at. Also everyone wants to get in to this space. Including Reliance with their music portal, Zapak, etc…

Media2Win, Hungama are pure media buying outfits. BC Webwise is surely no interactive folks. They are a boutique design firm, like 100 other firms in india.

Full services interactive firms means someone who breathe User Experience (UX as it is popularly known today) with services like UI, RIA, Software programming, SAS, so called Web 2.0, Usability at large, etc There are only hand full in india today. (I am not counting Sapient since they are only doing support and maintenance work in india, but they say they do some great UX in india)

Only two companies who are not talking much but silent killers are http://www.peppersquare.com, http://www.apparatusmedialab.com

Nikhil you are doing some great work, make it better. Before writing and getting excited about a news get to the ground and wet your feet.

    Dapple
We’ll take your points, but you’re making it sound as if we’re some kids covering the industry. And that’s unfair, considering our legacy and experience covering the digital media scene for 6 years now. That’s all.

  • From Digital Man Wed 21 Nov 2007 08:24 PM

I agree with Rafat and really applaud the effort put in by the team and verifying various leads. They have to let go so many leads when they can’t get the confirmations (which the company will not do most of the time but thats a point of discussion for some day).

My biggest grouse has been their reluctance to go out and write a feature on big picture. Like when the Quasar thing happened I saw a comment on asking for what will happen to other digital agencies. And in couple of days one of them sells substantial (not majority) stake. So an analysis on why someone is selling and someone is not is very much appreciated. Also understand all these businesses are run by enterprenures and not the professional managements. So the deal depends a lot on the comfort level of the individual (like neeraj Roy, sidhratha rao, manish vij, ramani etc) and not become an industry standard. At times it is an ego issue or at times it is the way they perceive market and future.

The six years of industry experience would be really valued if these kind of subjective (and may be provocative) analysis is very much appreciated.

    Hey Dapple,

    your wrote the following:

I hope you know what that means completely because you mentioned 2 companies that were “SILENT KILLERS” in the same.

So i went and checked out the 2 sites that you define as so called “silent killers” and both the sites are no where close to being Web 2.0 and UI friendly. Or maybe your definition of your comment or your understanding of Web 2.0 is “tables” “tr” “td” hmmmm i would ask your “silent killers” to read up on XHTML and CSS. Oh yea by the way our website is going through a transformation but will be up soon, currently we are in tables, but dapple if your so called “silent killers” want to Breathe Web 2.0 then give them a tutorials on XHTML and CSS.

This is going from absurd to nonsense. This platofrm seems to becoming a place to mud sling on one another.

Anyways, for getting a perspective on an industry, pure collation of news material from various sources on the net is not good enough and it does not consitutute experiece.

An editorial team is needed to interview and research and as someone said above, getting the feet wet. However, to side with Content Sutra, I think its a swell job, getting all the data collated at one place acts as a great industry reference. And I do not think, they are trying to giving perspective about the industry, they are only collating the news and presenting in an easily indexed manner.

Hence guys, lets stop the mudslinging and get to doing some business.

    Cheers.

I have been watching this industry for some time now and it looks like this space is in for some interesting times. There are very few companies in India with some decent team size, presence and portfolio and with these acquisitions and investments, it makes it harder for the other big agencies to choose. There are probably only 2 or 3 other companies that are left and may be worth looking at in this space now. With all this, we can expect valuations to zoom for these interactive agencies, pure media as well as design and build agencies.

The ‘CAT’ Scrap above, was Very SparKEY....and Illuminating, more than even the Basic Log..Quasar & WebChutney hyper-Mix.

The Interactive UX arena will definately see many such
    Interesting Scrap’s...during 2008…

  • From puchoo Wed 21 Nov 2007 10:52 PM

Dapple, a bit too much on your comment. A little less spice the next time!

All i can say is Congrats to webchutney , they have been doing a lot of good stuff , just retain the creative and planning independence !!

  • From Dapple Wed 21 Nov 2007 10:58 PM

    I agree with A M Singh.

Rafat.. it is my view point.  I am saying make it better. Not just ME first approach. You are more than a news provider. We have enough already. I come to your site cuz i like it. Information is the biggest liability today, cut down on the words, buzz, hype and talk the real stuff.

Lets not be defensive. Anish request you to see what these guys have done for their clients and not their website. We are not talking style sheets and some web2.0 lingo.

    hey digital man good persective.

  • From Sanjay Trehan Wed 21 Nov 2007 11:01 PM

Dapple: While I appreciate your comments, I must say they were slightly offensive in their tonal quality. CS and Nikhil, in particular, are doing a sterling job in terms of their reportage viz. the happenings in the nascent-and-getting-there digital media industry in India. I have quite often benefitted from their sharp commentary and am glad that they are around. We are going to hear a lot from them (and about them) in the near future.

  • From Jyoti Pahadsingh Wed 21 Nov 2007 11:32 PM

Dapple: Thanks for highlighting pepper square but I agree with Sanjay. Tone is slightly offensive. We are keen to know who you are. I have personally been following contentSutra for more than a year and feel they do a great job. Sometime speculative news is more exciting than confirmed one smile). Not to miss the key subject… WebChutney… Siddhartha is a friend and I would give all credit to him and his team for this great deal.

Anish: I invite you to look at our portfolio. There are many web 2.0 work which we’re not in a position to publish.

  • From Bimal Desai Thu 22 Nov 2007 01:57 AM

hmmmmmmmmm… all that stuff up there is getting quite tangential for no reason. I think we need to remind ourselves - let’s appreciate the good work. period. be it contenSutra or webchutney… nothing happens overnight - there are people who slog out to make things happen and see things take shape…

  • From Siddharth Puri Thu 22 Nov 2007 02:15 AM

Webchutney has been in this space for too long and Sidharth and his team has worked out hard to reach this stage. My only concern is they should maintain their creative freedom and remain on chart for their innovation plan.

They are one of the few industry leaders from whom we can expect to bring out industry changing products.

Best of luck guys and hope we see Bigger Sedans outside Web chutney office.

  • From dee Thu 22 Nov 2007 10:54 PM

hey people.....chill axe… we are here to share and understand each other. An excellent effort by the people here....even though some were a little offensive at times but then what the hell-----every one is allowed to get with the flow at time...So i thank you all for such informative and interesting show....and yes even i feel that this will be one of the most visited sites in the years to come…

“Full services interactive firms means someone who breathe User Experience (UX as it is popularly known today) with services like UI, RIA, Software programming, SAS, so called Web 2.0, Usability at large, etc There are only hand full in india today. “
