Over 9 Percent Of Tata Teleservices Revenue Is VAS; Tie-Up With Opera For Browser

Some data on Tata Teleservices (TTSL) on VAS, from a release by Qualcomm: 9.4 percent of TTSLs overall revenue is from value-added-services (VAS). Around 80 percent of this VAS revenue is from non-SMS services. From Qualcomm’s (NSDQ: QCOM) perspective-- TTSL has received 30 million downloads of BREW content and applications in 2007. They claim that over one million users access BREW services every month, with the user base tripling in the last year.
Tata Teleservices has tied up with Opera Software to offer Opera mini embedded in the Huawei C2900i handset (priced at Rs. 1999 - around $50). Opera Mini uses a remote proxy server to pre-process Web pages, that helps reduce the size of data transfers, and resizes the pages to fit the mobile screen. TTSL allows users unlimited access to the Internet via the mobile at prices between Rs. 10 (around $0.25) per day to Rs. 99 (around $2.5) per month...that’s 1/5th the price I’m paying every month for GPRS on Airtel.
