@PaidContent: Last.fm’s Free On-Demand Music Platform

By Nikhil Pahwa - Thu 24 Jan 2008 02:14 AM PST

Joseph Weisenthal from our sister site PaidContent.org was at the launch of Last.fm’s free on-demand music streaming platform, and you may read about the launch and the service here.  Labels and artists get paid per listen, and a user can listen to a track only three times. That limitation looks as if it’s label imposed - all four major labels and 150,000 independent labels have signed up - and will have to be either increased or removed altogether. CBS (NYSE: CBS) will use its ad sales resources for selling ads (displayed on a billboard beside the song). I think ad-supported free streaming music will work only if the cost of streaming is low enough. How long do you think it will take for such a service to be launched in India, with Indian music labels?
