Portal For People Of Indian Origin Piotv.com Launched

By Nikhil Pahwa - Thu 23 Aug 2007 08:23 PM PST

Piotv.com, a video portal for connecting People of Indian Origin (PIOs) was launched yesterday. CEO of PIO TV Munish Gupta said that it was conceived as a site for covering India from the perspective of PIOs, differently from Indian sites. From the presscon yesterday:

Content: PIO TV is a broadcast affiliate of CNN, which allows them to use raw CNN feeds, and offer content to CNN. PTI will provide raw news feeds from India, while Sanchar Bharti will give multilingual audio content. A content tie-up with Prachar Communications gives them access to content providers like Time and Venus...over a thousand movies, and music videos. The site allows users to upload content, which will be moderated.

Community: They’ll eventually create a directory of PIOs, and hope to have the who’s who from the community on the site. Gupta says that events will drive interest and stickiness: they have launched a talent hunt show called Bollywood Popstar covering 7 cities in the US, and had covered the GOPIO summit online. The site also aggregates conversations as hot topics from the forum.

Rafat adds: A badly designed site which still needs tons of work.

Remove negativism. It is not healthy for you soul.
    Let the market decide.

We take criticism in a healthy way. One needs to understands its a major effort in terms of creating an integrated media platform. I clarified to the press yesterday it is an initial deployment of our first module that’s taken herculean effort by our team. I would encourage our users to give us pointers and specific ideas, if they have any. We welcome them. Thanks for checking us out. Wait and watch. Cheers!

    Nikhil,
Thanks a ton. Just want to clarify for legal reasons and even otherwise that we are in the process of BECOMING a broadcast affiliate of CNN. NETV has been an affiliate in the past and as a sister/affiliate organization, PIOTV.com, is in the process of negotiating that extended relationship as a broadcast affiliate. Both sides are very happy to work together towards extending and expanding our collaboration.
I also want to emphasize that PIOTV.com will be creating a lot of its very special original content of its own from the PIO dominated countries and regions across the world. And, that’s really our USP. We don’t want your readers and our users to think that we are a re-broadcaster of any news service or just other content providers or re-publisher of PTI content.
    Thanks again and cheers
    Munish

    Munish
Thanks for clarification...but it still looks a half-baked and badly developed site, based on the design...even if you had done all the work in the back, it doesn’t come through.

Terrible UI. No information about the company etc. Just click on the “contact” and the “About us” tabs
If you don’t have complete info, why even launch it?

The site needs lot more content. I like the design. it looks fresh. Strange they don’t have company information up.

i would agree with Praveen and Rafat.  I really hope this thing is in pre-alpha stage b/c at the moment it just looks unappealing.  too much happening and all over the place.

the following site has NOTHING todo with TV content, but is a very well designed site http://www.picnik.com/

and you know within seconds what the site is all about, very good layout and presentation.  Maybe a bit too web 2.0 for some people, but i like it.

there’s a design principle - “equal emphasis means no emphasis”. piotv.com homepage has equal emphasis on over 100 icons that ensures user will lose interest in clicking on any of them. loads of work done on the backend doesn’t have to reflect on the front end. remove 80% distractions and guide the reader’s eye..
