Qualcomm Eyes 2010 For Launch Of Mobile TV Service

By Anupama Chandrasekaran - Wed 19 Sep 2007 06:57 PM PST

Nikhil’s written quite a bit on Qualcomm’s (NSDQ: QCOM) MediaFLO versus Nokia’s (NYSE: NOK) DVB-H mobile TV technologies, with readers offering insightful comments on the two rival technologies. Just adding a few tit bits from an otherwise repetitive Mint article. Qualcomm, which is betting big on large-scale adoption of the service in India and is in talks with several telecom operators, broadcasters and mobile content developers to offer interactive mobile TV, hopes to launch the service in time for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New  Delhi.  It  is anticipating  the  event will spur mass adoption of the service.
Qualcomm, which offers end-to-end mobile TV solutions and makes chipsets, licenses the MediaFLO standard but Nokia, the largest handset maker and a dominant player in India, has decided to adopt DVB-H in what is considered a blow to Qualcomm. In addition, Nokia has partnered with Doordarshan, which has a monopoly on terrestrial broadcasting, to offer DD’s channels on mobiles using DVB-H in India. Not a surprise to hear that Qualcomm is indeed pedaling hard to rival Nokia’s efforts.

I like Nokia’s phones a lot--I think they’ll do well. and with Doordarshan, Qualcomm won’t have a chance.

I think Mobile Tv should also be on the agenda of the commonwealth games plannung committees apart from the government agencies. Afterall we do see a lot of facilitation of roads, transport and other infrastructure.

Will be be realistically be able to see a good mobile Tv service by that time? The answer depends on many factors like whether 3G spectrum will go through and to whom, how will mobile TV be licensed etc. There is a need to see through that not only the technology is licensed, but it is actually available to a reasonable section of viewers. This will require certain standardization.
In a mobile market which has a very limited number of smartphones capable of recieving Mobile TV, if these too are split amongst many technologies, this nascent market will never take off. The only reason for strong recommendation for DVB-H has been that India has adopted DVB-T as the standard for terrestrial broadcasting and DVB-T and DVB-H can operate on same platforms. It has no implication on any other technology being inferior or superior. This is analogous to EU recommending a single standard or China selecting a seperate standard for mobile TV.These two markets will outpace others owing to this very reason, with perhaps china being the largest in the world in two years.
