Reliance Signs Up With Microsoft on IPTV Venture

By Rafat Ali - Mon 05 Nov 2007 10:33 AM PST

Reliance Communications has tied up with Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) for its IPTV venture, which is launching in March next year: Reliance will pay Microsoft about $500 million in license fees to use its IPTV service software, which delivers HD video over phone lines to home TV sets, reports AP. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said the tie-up targets the mass market in India, whereas in the Western countries IPTV mostly focuses on affluent customers.

Updated: RapidTVNews: Reliance is also backing the Bluemagic DTH platform which was scheduled to launch by the end of 2007, but has slipped to first quarter 2008. But much less noise has been made about that service. It will use the Measat-3 satellite to beam MPEG4-compressed programming into the sub-Continent.

I tend to agree with Prashant ... I want IPTV to come in but I am worried that Reliance might not have the critical missing resource ... the last mile. If they go about setting it up ... it will take a number of years ... even after accounting for Reliance’s impressive project execution track record. ... The other option they have ... of buying out MSOs is ... something they failed at earlier ... is going to be even more difficult now ... since other MSOs (Hathway ... TV18 .... Siti) have started buying smaller MSOs. It would be interesting to see where this goes ... I tend to agree that this could be more of a futuristic decision by Ambanis

I think if the rent will be lower than others then BIG TV will take place in every home of India. Because REliance is big name.
