Roaming Wireless Data Card In India: Need Suggestions

By Rafat Ali - Wed 14 Feb 2007 04:07 PM PST

I am planning a short India trip at end of this month, and need some suggestions on a wireless data card so that I can be connected outside of metro areas. The situation: my family lives in Aligarh, about 125 kms from Delhi, and Internet access there is still a pain: no real broadband to speak of and even then it is flaky. I am thinking of getting a Reliance or Tata wireless data card in Delhi, and then use it as roaming in Aligarh, but some people have told me it may not work that way.
Wondering if any of our readers know about this, and/or any other suggestions on staying connected outside and even traveling within Delhi. Also, do any of these companies have a pre-paid data card, or would I have to get a contract/post-paid? And how easy or difficult is it to get one in a store?

You can also try Airtel’s Data card. It is pretty good, except for the fact that it costs more than what Reliance charges.

  • From cootcrazy Wed 14 Feb 2007 08:38 PM

Use any of the service providers, given the rocking scanario on the mobile penetration and infrastructure in the country, all of them will work in Aligarh .

Serivce is okay not great, will allow you to acess your e-mail, and do basic bit of surfing . You could do with some more speed ...

Hey I also come from Aligarh. Thats my home town too grin

Reliance works comfortable for the purpose. Also there are quite a few guys whom i can ask to let you login for free in their personal wifi in case you get stuck. (My home included).

    So welcome back home !

    Cheers

Rafat, the key thing is that there are no roaming charges on data cards. You buy a plan worth Rs 650 or Rs 1100 on Reliance which allows you to download x MB per month from anywhere in India. Your location is irrelevant.

I’ve been using the Reliance card in Delhi. Mumbai, Pune and some in-between places have been fairly pleased. While the speed isnt enough for delay-free Skype usage, it’s more than enough for most applications.

  • From Sidhartha Bezbora Fri 16 Feb 2007 12:17 AM

    Dear Rafat,
Reliance Datacard will work fine in Aligarh. Speed is quite ok. You can check mails, chat and browse sites easily.

I had booked a Reliance Net connect connection as I got a free offer with my HCL laptop.

The offer was for Rs.3750 for three months internet usage free with a download limit of 1

    GB.

The strange thing was the next month I got a bill for Rs. 382 which was followed by

    another bill of Rs. 2464.

Apparently the FREE OFFER WITH HCL AND HP AND OTHER OFFERS IS NOT FREE FOR THREE MONTHS.

THEY SEND YOU BILLS THE NEXT MONTH.When I escalated it to Reliance they said they would

look into it and have since never gotten back. According to my bill there is a fine print

that says its 1 GB download or 20 hours of internet surfing time (which is not specified

anywhere). That means if you cross the 20 hours you pay @ Rs0.50 per minute.

I urge anyone who has THE HP OR HCL OR COMPAQ LAPTOP TO NOT BUY THE DATACARD FREE OFFER

ITS JUST RELIANCE’S WAY OF CHEATING PEOPLE.

IF YOU ARE SO KEEN ON A DATACARD YOU MAY HAVE MINE (FREE OF COST IF U CAN HELP ME TAKE

THESE PEOPLE TO TASK FOR CHEATING CUSTOMERS. ITS WORTHLESS NOW GIVEN THE PILED UP BILLS)

I just spoke to the reliance & airtel regarding their data card speed, they said that the truth is you will not get more than 30kbps & 20-30 kbps from the resp cards. At least they were being frank. I wonder what speed the tata vdata card is? must be similar.

reliance also have a data card which is usb type plug in, which one can use in the laptop.

Laptops are coming with the new Express Card slots. Do the data card suppliers now give the data card which will fit in this slot, airtel & reliance do not have this new type of card, the airtel & reliance off said so this morning.

i am a college student and i would very much like to know if these service providers offer consistency and reasonable speeds......

if possible can somebody tell me about the tarrif plans for reliance (i heard it was the cheapest )

which companies provide roaming wireless data cards in india

  • From ramakant Thu 14 Jun 2007 01:11 AM

the cards are better then a dial up connection , remember it is 112 kbps not 112 KBPS.
So a max rating of 256 Kbps translates to 32 KBps.  The b is important. Broadband starts from 128 KBPS or 1024 Kbps.

    Dear Friends,
My Compaq PresarioV6218TU Laptop has the following specifications
    1.Windows Vista Home Basic.
    2.ExpressCard/54 slot.
    My questions are
1.whether any ISP sells a ExpressCard slot-Compatible DATACARD or I have the only choice of going for the USB modem of Reliance?
2.If I go for the USB Rel. Modem, whether it is Vista-compatible(recent ones)
3.whther reliance 144kbps USBmodem will give the same performace (atleast) available at the FWP-LG sets - I would be satisfied atleast if it gives same speed and hassle-free.(leave alone the billing problems).
    or
Considering the irresponsible, irresponsive & “costumer-take-em for granted” mentality of the all the present ISPs(Airtel,REL,etc),whether it is better to wait for the BSNL CARDs which r in the pipe line.
Anybody Pl.help me out in this regrad.
    RAJ

    hi

don’t ever even think of buying a reliance data card or a usb modem as they do not have the drivers for vista. If u really plan to use a wireless usb modem then u will need to install winxp as ur 2ndry OS,u can trst me over this as i m using a reliance usb modm and u no what the speed sucks and for the past 3-4 weeks i get disconnected exactly after a min and the customer care guys have given me the same scrap of network cogestion evry time i calld them.if u r based in bangalore stay away from reliance data cards and modems and i have been hearing the same about tata indicom u can chk with airtel however u never no abou airtel

  • From ashish Wed 04 Jul 2007 05:52 AM

  • From Shaheen Sat 21 Jul 2007 09:13 AM

    hi all,

I am from Kerala and i connect my laptop using phone nokia 6630 via Airtel GPRS. Not GPRS actually, here it is EDGE( hope u all know its enhance data rate for gsm evolution or enhanced gprs, EGPRS). Here I get a speed varying from 33Kbps from 76Kbps depending on the network traffic. I think its the cheapest connection avail. Moreover it is the cheapest in my area for a moderate user.

Rates are ‘1500 per year’ or ‘900 for six months’ or ‘600 for 3 months’ or ‘250 for one month’. Longer plan u take, tat much u save. The rates shown are for postpaid, for prepaid its a little higher. For the amount mentioned u r getting truly unlimited(both time and data) ; so don’t worry about those bills!!!

Although broadband users may find it slow for browsing especially, its good in the morning for browsing. In night, early morning and low congestion times, you will get a avg download speed of 9.5KBps(76Kbps) or higher. It DOES depends on the signal strength of your area.

Roaming is free on airtel networks through out india.

And most of all you can do chat and browse on your phone whenever u want without opening up ur laptop and waiting for booting and so, if you have a descent phone.

So wat u need is an EDGE enabled phone with class10 modem.

connecting via bluetooth decreases the performance to a little extent. but i don’t understand why it is so

tats information is for all of you. Now let me tell wat i want to know from you.
I want to know the performance of Airtel DATA CARD and Airtel USB modem. i.e. whether using this will we get more speed than while connecting using an EDGE enabled phone?

most of all never ever believe AIrtel customer care. Most of the people donno what is EDGE or the fullform of GPRS!!! why sunil mittal doesn’t care tat???

if you need any further info from my side, contact me

I can not use my reliance data card as my new lap top does’t have PCMIA slot. I am using Reliance USB modem at the moment. I found USB modem is slower than the data card. Does any one have any idea on when we will have Data card for Express card slot from any company? please advise me. Thanks.

why do you need to go for a datacard which is relatively costlier and slower you can buy a cellphone prepaid connection and use tht as a modem to connect to the internet [I wud say its really faster than the datacard from reliance]..well only some of the reliance handsets can be usEd as a modem and u wud need a usb cable to cinnect ur computer which u canbuy as low as 150rs.  once u r done .......
