Sabeer Bhatia Launches Networking Site - ApnaCircle.com

By Nikhil Pahwa - Sun 23 Sep 2007 08:55 PM PST

We missed out on this one last month, so just for the record: Hotmail founder Sabeer Bhatia is entering the online networking space with ApnaCircle.com, reports Business Standard. Well it’s yet another networking site in an already overcrowded space. As of now there’s really no real competition for Orkut and Facebook in India (Reliance and bigadda might disagree), though there are people with profiles in multiple social nets. Hence there’s opportunity for a sellout if there are buyers. Unlike email (Hotmail), though, social nets lack that sense of permanence. Bhatia already has a travel portal (Arzoo.com) which is looking to expand to US, West Asia and Australia, and has tied up with 1500 hotels in India. He’s founded ApnaCircle with Yogesh Bansal.

yeah, too many online social networking sites. its not going to be easy to shift people from orkut and facebook to apnacircle even if it has the sabeer bhatia name tag on it.
unless and until mr Bhatia has something really different and innovative to offer, its gonna take more than his name and money to expand in here.
but how about social networking via mobile? wouldn’t that be interesting?

    Sorry if i sound irrelevant,

Here is the fine-print which you find on Yaari’s registration page (to me it proves that social networking sites are forced to use pathetic strategies to get even a toe-hold on Internet)

“By registering for Yaari and agreeing to the Terms of Use, you authorize Yaari to send an email notification to all the contacts listed in the address book of the email address you provide during registration. The email will notify your friends that you have registered for Yaari and will encourage them to register for the site. Yaari will never store your email password or login to your email account without your consent. If you do not want Yaari to send an email notification to your email contacts, do not register for Yaari.”

Somebody once asked in an IAMAI event in mumbai “Is social networking a means to an end or an end in itself?”.. profound question Mr. Bhatia smile

And as great Raghu always says “Common sense precedes creativity” smile smile smile
