Chennai-based Shakti Extratainment will launch its IPTV channel in California on June 30 and in India in the first week of July, according to this Hindu story. The culture-themed channel will offer shows on a “watch at will” basis, through a special IPTV set top box of its platform partner Verismo Networks. The box will enable viewers to use their existing broadband connection to download programmes directly to their televisions, as opposed to personal computers. The company plans to telecast on other platforms like broadband TV and handheld devices as well. It will be interesting to see if niche themes like culture and classical music attract subscriptions from the Indian diaspora and increase the chances of the survival of such channels.
