Spice Mobiles Launches 3G Handset, Targets Half Million Sales

By Cerius Shah - Tue 29 Apr 2008 12:06 PM PST

Spice Mobiles, the mobile arm of the BK Modi controlled Spice Telecom, have launched two 3G handset in collaboration with Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM). ET quotes Spice Mobiles, Vice President, Modi, stating Spice Mobiles is targeting sales of four million handsets this year and half a million 3G handsets separately. Serious doubts on the latter considering the DoT had last delayed 3G spectrum allocation to year-end. The CDMA 3G handset is priced at Rs 6500 while the GSM handset is priced at Rs 8500. A picture of the S-950 with something prettier here.

Both handsets seem to have commonplace features like camera, mp3, etc. No word on the OS or browser that will be carried by the phone. Having used the iPhone in a Wifi environment for the past month, I can attest to the single most redeeming feature being the mobile web browsing experience. If the handsets can manage an experience even half as good with a decent data package and a competent OS to boot, Spice may just have a winner in the medium range handset market. This announcement comes a day after Qualcomm announced 3G Internet access device priced at approximately Rs 8,000 and an USB port priced at Rs 3,500. Spice Mobiles, which was recently in the news for the launch of a $20 (Rs 800) phone, is targeting a turnover of Rs 1,000 crore in the current fiscal.
