Turner Announces English Movie Channel, Animation Films Unit

By Cerius Shah - Tue 15 Apr 2008 02:25 AM PST

Turner International hasannounced that it intends to launch of Hollywood movies and series channel with Warner Bros. in the fourth quarter of this year. They also intend to launch an animation films unit, which unit will initially make two films a year, with the first one due in 2009. After the success of The Return of Hanuman, the industry seems bolstered. As reported earlier, Big Animation also has plans to launch its own mythological title sometime this year.

Turner Broadcasting APAC president Steve Marcopoto says India contributes 30% of Turner’s APAC revenues, most of which come from Cartoon Network, Pogo and HBO. What’s the point in running two English movie channels? Apparently, the new English movie channel will screen Turner’s classic movie collection from the 1920’s to 1980’s, if anyone remembers, when Cartoon Network first launched it shared its evening day-part with Turner classic featuring content of a similar nature. Turner also broadcasts CNN and has a 26 per cent stake in a distribution company where Zee holds the remaining 74 per cent. It also holds a 29% stake in production house Miditech. Their Joint Venture with Miditech, with former Times Now CEO Sunil Lulla at the helm, is expected to launch a Hindi GEC soon.
