VSNL, YRF To ‘Premiere’ Chak De On Web

By Nikhil Pahwa - Mon 28 Jan 2008 09:54 PM PST

[by Cerius Shah] Yash Raj Films (YRF) and VSNL (now Tata Indicom Broadband) have tied up for the web premiere of the SRK starrer Chak De India. Tata Indicom apparently has a library of over 300 Hindi and language movies and 600,000 songs. You need to be a Tata Indicom subscriber to be able to download the movie. The release says it’s an innovative Web format, can’t figure out that or the pricing since its behind a subscription wall. Besides Chak De, it has other hits from the YRF stable.

I don’t think this is a web premiere or an exclusive windowed arrangement. TinselVision has Chak De India (apparently in HD) up for download-to-own at $12.99, roughly Rs 500 a pop and DRM crippled.

    I find too many barriers for a user, before he sits with the popcorn in front of his PC screen. The first barrier being that he needs to be a Tata Indicom subscriber. Most broadband subscribers in India particularly the growing non-metro base uses BSNL Dataone. Even the cities either use MTNL or other cable operators.

    VSNL (now tata indicom) lags far behind in the connectivity race due to last mile problems for which it relied on untrustworthy cable guys and its not-so-penetrated landlines.

    Hence this funnels down the number of users who would actually get to download teh movie. Add to this the cost and trouble of downloading a movie.. why would anyone not choose to buy a DVD or walk across to the store to rent it?

    For the companies however, it is an “ornamental” news piece to gain some PR.

    WiMAX is the solution to the last mile problems and has been used by broadcsters and cable operators in many countries.
    With the extensive WiMAX network of VSNL( as well as other carriers), we hope that this will be a reality soon.

    This will defiantly help to stop piracy and encourage users to get legal music and movie at lower prices.
    Wimax could be best solution and will surly help us to make high speed live streaming

    @BlogsDna

    I think it would be the other way around as if would be much faster to download stuff on the internet.
