Yahoo India Launching Mail In Hindi, Web IM In Multiple Languages

Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) India has added two new localization features to its services—their web based messenger now allows instant messaging in multiple Indian languages - Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Punjabi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada. The company has also upgraded its email to allow mailing in Hindi, though I wasn’t able to enable it. A Yahoo spokesperson tells me that they’ll have rolled out the Hindi email feature to all India accounts in 3-4 days. Here’s a screencap. As per the release, the service is being offered only for Yahoo Mail Classic (not their desktop-mail like interface). In comparison, Rediff (NSDQ: REDF) already has a Hindi messenger, and it’s mail in 11 Indian languages. Sify has multilingual email as well.
