Yahoo Layoffs: 45 In Bangalore Asked To Quit

By Nikhil Pahwa - Thu 14 Feb 2008 12:01 AM PST

Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) India has asked 45 full time employees to put in their papers, reports Business Standard, quoting a source who says that over 100 employees may be asked to quit. Additionally, a senior employee has told BS that recruitment has been slow ever since the Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) bid.

This may be a part of job cuts taking place worldwide at Yahoo, which is expecting to lay off around 1000 people globally. CEO Jerry Yang had mentioned a 1000 “Targeted” job cuts in an investors earnings call last month, and “a strategic workforce realignment” by mid-February, aimed at eliminating “redundancies in bureaucracy” and redeploying talent. We’ve contacted Yahoo India for a confirmation, and more info.

Update: Sharad Sharma, Yahoo’s R&D chief in India, has confirmed the layoffs.

Well seeing layoffs in IBM and TCS also this might just be the beginning of another IT slump. The growth rate has been phenomenal in past few years and this might be signalling another road downwards for IT companies. Lower margin rates coupled with weaker Dollar value has further worsened the situation.

I was a ex Yahoo until wed. My manager called me to the 2 nd floor, where HR was already waiting, and read a list of termination reasons off a paper. He didn’t even bother to wish me a good future. HR took my computer and security pass. Access to email had been shut down during the meeting. HR then escorted me to the street. I was not given the opportunity to say bye to my team. Most people at Yahoo are great and it was the best company I’ve ever worked for. But as everywhere else, there are idiots in charge as well. The way the layoffs are being managed is a shame. Fellow Yahoos, I wish you all the best
