Yahoo To Launch Our City And Maps On Mobile; On Yahoo Groups

By Nikhil Pahwa - Tue 05 Feb 2008 08:32 PM PST

Yahoo’s (NSDQ: YHOO) front page will open up to widgets, reports the Hindu. On the mobile, they will launch a mobile version of Our City and Maps, once Yahoo Go 3.0 is launched in India. Nothing yet about when Yahoo Local will be launched for India - it’s been in alpha for close to a year now, but Yahoo doesn’t want to comment on it. Our City, which was developed in India, has apparently getting traction in Australia.

According to this Mint report, India has the second largest user base of Yahoo Groups after the US; in all there are around 8 million groups, with over 100 million subscribers. Groups and mailing lists are great sources for information and discussion; I know of Creativegarh, which is used extensively by creative professionals, and completed seven years recently. Then there’s the Zest group of groups, which I subscribe to. Google’s (NSDQ: GOOG) not too far behind, though—during the Bloggers block a couple of years ago, all the discussion regarding how to deal with the situation took place at the Bloggers Collective Group. One downside to groups is that often they’re used to host pirated or proprietary content—check out some groups in this list.
