Google Earth Back In Controversy; Indian Army Worried, Google Shrugs It Off

By Sahad PV - Tue 04 Apr 2006 07:04 AM PST

NDTV.com: Google is back in controversy in India. Soon after Indian army chief JJ Singh expressed fears that the high-resolution images of strategic defence facilities on Google Earth would pose a danger to India’s national security, the Mountainview-based search engine giant is again on a defensive mode. Google said such images were already available with others too and there was nothing new in what Google Earth had captured. It said it was holding talks with the Indian government to dispel fears.
Singh had said, “It (Google Earth) is equally dangerous to all countries and will have to be jointly tackled by all countries.” Google Earth contains pictures of military bases, offices of the Prime Minister and the President of India and nuclear facilities among other sites in the world. Google India would be needing skilled PR managers too and not just geeks.
