IBM Tries To Sell Broadband Over Power Line In India

By Nikhil Pahwa - Mon 13 Nov 2006 05:50 AM PST

Tech 2.0 reports that IBM is in talks with utility providers in India to offer Broadband over Power Line (BPL). Reji Kumar, Head of IBM’s Energy and Utilities Communications sector says that BPL will help bridge the technology gap between rural and urban India by providing internet access.
We’re already aware of Microsoft’s initiative to provide PCs and Internet access in Rural India; villagers in India would probably prefer to get actual power over those power lines. As far as urban India is concerned, there are already other modes of Internet access that are well established, and still more on their way.
The power companies might still take it up because of other benefits that the IBM intelligent network system claims it has. According to this report at Zee News, the deals are likely to be finalized by the end of the year.
