Intel Launches Rugged PC For Rural India

By Sahad PV - Fri 31 Mar 2006 11:03 AM PST

Press release: Intel Corporation has launched its much-awaited PC platform for the rural villages and communities in India. I haven’t seen the thing, but the press release says that it’s a set of locally relevant computing solutions based on Intel technology. The statement says that the Community PC platform was designed after intensive ethnographic studies in rural India. It addresses issues like weather conditions (heat, dust, humidity) and unreliable power sources that can compromise typical PCs used in remote rural environments.
So it has a ruggedized chassis, which is “designed to withstand dusty conditions, varying temperatures and high humidity, and a removable dust filter and integrated air fan to regulate the temperature of the motherboard. The chassis is designed to keep the motherboard cool at temperatures as high as 45 degrees celsius and the PC is resistant to high humidity levels. Its is also equipped with a customized power supply unit which is comprised of an Integrated Power Supply and the UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) unit, which allow the PC to maintain continuous load power in the event of a power outage. It’s also power-saving with the total power consumption of all peripherals being less than 100 watts.
CIOL adds: Amar Babu, managing director, South Asia, Sales and Marketing, did not reveal the price of the PC, but said that it would not be a low cost PC. He said that they are in talks with the OEM partners after which they would announce the price.
