Updated: Some Indians Taking To Second Life; Group Plans Related Business Services

By Nikhil Pahwa - Wed 06 Dec 2006 03:48 AM PST

Are Indian’s taking to ‘Second Life’, the popular online virtual world? Apparently so...the Economic Times ferreted out some Indian’s also living a virtual life, including a group called VR1 which intends to explore Second Life’s business propositions. Rahul Dutta, one of the founders of VR1, said that they are planning an educational network hub, solutions for MNCs, assistance with island acquisition, world modeling, scripting, animation and graphic design services for Second Life.
Sounds more like an outsourcing business plan to me...how many Indians are in Second Life and is it commercially viable?
Update: Rahul Datta of VR1 informs us that it’s not an outsourcing business. They’re going to focus on the Indian market, and see opportunity in e-commerce and e-learning via the 3D interface. He adds: “While we are exploring Second Life as an interesting commercial and developmental platform, our focus is more in introducing 3D interfaces and virtual worlds in general to the Indian public. I have believed very strongly that it is a much stronger and more intuitive mode of communication than anything currently offered on the web.”
